WHAT IS THE LONE STAR CUP?

The Inaugural Texas Cup was held in May 2002 at Tapatio Springs in Boerne, Texas.  The name of the event was later changed to Lone Star Cup because there is another amateur event in the Dallas area named Texas Cup.

The tournament format is match play, similar to the Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup, with all chapters in the South Central Section competing against each other.  The Friday rounds are played with a partner in either alternate shot or best ball format.  The Saturday rounds are individual rounds.  The scoring is net of handicap.  Pairings are based on handicap to match players of equal ability.  The team sizes have varied from eight to as many as sixteen but the size is normally twelve.

At the Inaugural Texas Cup, the San Antonio captain was Wendy Peacock who selected eight players to represent the SA chapter.  San Antonio won the tournament by winning 9 of a possible 12 points.

San Antonio has always had very strong teams and has the most wins of any chapter.  There is no prize for second.  The event is very highly competitive as the chapters compete for pride, bragging rights and a nice trophy that travels around to the winning chapters.

The 2010 Lone Star Cup will be held August 26-28 at Barton Creek Resort in Austin and will feature fun play for non-LSC participants in addition the tournament.  The approximate cost will run about $660 which includes LSC play, two night stay, breakfast and awards banquet on Saturday night.  Not included are extra golf, extra room and some food.

The San Antonio Team will have new captains this year.  Barbara Peeler and Cathy Delaney will be co-captains.  The team is selected through results of qualification rounds.  Players of all levels of handicap are encouraged to participate.  You must have a verifiable handicap to compete.  Tentative plans are to begin qualifying rounds in April and conclude in early July.  There will be six qualifying rounds, three on Saturday and three on Sunday—unless scheduling causes alternate plans.  Each player’s lowest three net scores are used to determine the qualifiers for the team.   The team will consist of twelve team members and two alternates.  The co-captains must play in the qualifying rounds and are automatically two of the team members.  The co-captains reserve the right to two captain’s picks.  Once the team is determined, we plan to meet for clinics and rules seminars if possible.  Please let Barbara Peeler (bgpeeler@wireweb.net) know ASAP if you plan to participate in the Lone Star Cup qualifying rounds.  The deadline for notification is March 24 — NO EXCEPTIONS.  No one will be allowed to participate unless registered by deadline.  If you have questions please notify Barbara Peeler (bgpeeler@wireweb.net) or Cathy Delaney (cldelaney@swbell.net).
